“Week
6”
My original resource
is the site of National Institute for Early Education Research http://www.nieer.org/. A couple of the outside links that NIEER
leads to is CENTER ON ENHANCING EARLY LEARNING OUTCOMES (CEELO), and PNC-NIEER:
A Strategic Partnership in Support of Early Learning in the States. The link to the CEELO site discussed many
different initiatives in regards to assessments of early childhood education
programs.
The Center on
Enhancing Early Learning Outcomes (CEELO) goal is to strengthen the capacity of
State Education Agencies (SEAs) to lead sustained improvements in early
learning opportunities and outcomes. CEELO will work in partnership with SEAs,
state and local early childhood leaders, and other federal and national technical
assistance (TA) providers to promote innovation and accountability. (National Institute for Early Education
Research, 2013)
One of the biggest
stories on the e-newsletter that I receive was about the government shutdown and
the harsh impact the shutdown has on some children’s programs. With the government being shut down there’s
no money to pay the staff, in addition to some grants that expired on October 1st
which caused these centers to be closed (National Institute for Early Education
Research, 2013).
I learned that the
number of seats for children to attend early childhood programs has
increased. This means that more children
can attend programs. The increase has
been increased mostly in the poverty stricken areas. I’m happy for the increase but I do wish it
could happen in all areas. However the
chance to even be able to educate one more child is a step in the right
direction.
Hi Sherry,
ReplyDeleteThe shutdown did not affect our center, thank God, but my heart goes out to those who were affected. It is wonderful the site you chose let you know about the impact on the early childhood community. This website would be an asset to have for any early childhood educator to stay abreast of the breaking news involving our profession. Great blog.
Sherry, I also receive the NIEER online newsletter and read about the threats to Head Start programs due to the government shutdown. I was happy to read about the Arnold Foundation announcement of a $10 million donation to ensure that Head Start programs say open during the shutdown. It is heartwarming to know that there are philanthropists out there that understand the importance of this work! -Susan
ReplyDeleteThis is a really good site. I just started receiving newsletters too. It is great that there is an increase but I also agree with you that the increase needs to happen in all areas. The shutdown is really sad an affecting so many people. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThe government shut down is very upsetting. I saw where EBT cards in 17 states were declined. This effects the children's ability to focus in class because they are hungry potentially. The increase of children would be nice only if the classroom sizes were still small. It is harder for teachers to teach effectively when the class size is large.
ReplyDeleteThe increased seats in early childhood programs is indeed a big step, hopefully more parents are able to afford access. I also appreciate CCELO's initiative movements. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteSherry,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your post, it reminds me of when I was a teacher in my old country. My pay was also very low, the monthly salary was just enough for me to buy gas.
